Every illustration starts with:

  1. An overview from the client on the intention behind the piece or pieces requested.

  2. The format and understanding of where it will live once completed.

  3. A brainstorm and sketching to get ideas on the direction and visuals (see left image). This step also includes gathering inspiration from Dribbble, Pinterest, and other sites to get ideas.

The next step is creating the lineart for a few of the pieces that are selected by the client. See linework in the image to the right. This piece is for a management training framework website.

Depending on where this will be located eventually, sometimes it’s nice to include this in mockups to see how it will fit into the flow of things.

After dialing it in, the next step is finalizing a piece.

Once the color is added, illustrations can be exported at the sizes needed. See a final produced piece to the left. Additional icons and spot illustrations will be added throughout the site with the same style and color to keep everything cohesive.
